OSU fraternities and sororities have done much to help out children. At times, local families need help with medical expenses for their children and the Greek societies step forward. In 2000, 27 different sororities and fraternities held a rib and pie eating contest to help raise funds for a local young girl with leukemia go to Disney World through the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oregon. In 2004, Lambda Chi Alpha held a benefit concert for another young girl with cancer.
At other times, money has been raised to support others who are working to help children. In 1995, Tau Kappa Epsilon raised donations through a flag football tournament for the Hope House in Benton county, which supported abused children. And back in 1976, members of several sororities participated in the Mother’s March to raise funds for research on birth defects and local families with children with disabilities.
OSU Greeks also just like to see children have fun. Halloween has been a popular time for fraternity and sorority members to help children carve pumpkins and put on haunted houses for local children. In 1971, Kappa Delta members spent their fall making eight puppets which they presented to Salem Day Care Center.
