Interviewee: Jessica Wall
Interviewer: Anda Gherghe
Interview Date: February 8, 2021
Location: Separate residences, collected over Zoom
Duration: 1:20:36

In the interview, Wall describes her early childhood interests in Washington, her educational experiences with a dyslexia diagnosis, work as an EMT throughout her undergraduate studies, and her undergraduate experience at both Whitman College and the Honors College at Oregon State University. From there, Wall reflects on her decision to attend medical school, with a particular focus on her original sense of direction, the medical school application process, and her decision to attend The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Wall then recalls her experience as a medical school student, including the initial adjustment to her studies, committing to a specialty in pediatric emergency medicine, and engaging with research opportunities. She next discusses her experience moving to California for her residency at UCLA-Olive View and then the factors that contributed to her decision to move to Pennsylvania for her fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

The second half of the interview session is dedicated to Wall’s current experience in the faculty and hospital positions that she holds, with a reflection that includes her relocation back to Washington, continued incorporation of EMS, and progression as an assistant professor. Specifically addressed among her work as a faculty member and in the hospital is the impact of COVID-19. Wall shares the number of ways that COVID-19 has affected the practice of medicine: patient care and relationships, physician workload, and burnout within the medical field.

The interview concludes with further reflections of Wall’s experience as a woman in academics and medicine, the influence of mentorship during her career pathway, thoughts on the progression and future of medicine, advice for young students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, and Wall’s own future direction and ambitions for her professional and personal life.
