Block 14 Memorial
In 2007 Multnomah County and the City of Portland collaborated to demolish the existing building and level the ground. Then they deeded Block 14 to Metro, which is the government agency that manages Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery. A year later, Metro formed the Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery work group to discuss future plans for the Block 14 site. The committee, which includes representatives from the Buckman Neighborhood, the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, the Friends of Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery and Portland Fire and Rescue, worked in collaboration with Metro staff and a team from Lango Hansen Landscape Architects to design a memorial.
The design includes a community gathering space, a memorial garden and an interpretive kiosk. Notably, Block 14 was also the burial space for patients of Dr. Hawthorne,
founder of Portland's first mental health hospital and the
design incorporates their history as well.
