I am very pleased to accept the appointment mentioned in your letter of January
5 as a member of the special committee which will devote its attention to the question
of the future of medical research in this country.
If the committee holds many meetings, it may not be possible for me to attend
all of them, because of the distance from California to Washington. I shall, however,
