Linus Pauling: ...when I was a boy, 18, 19 years old, I kept wondering why some elements combined with one another very vigorously, with each other very vigorously and others hardly at all. Why you have noble metals and very reactive metals and non-metals. The electronegativity scale is the answer to that, I'm pleased to say.
