Introduction The three sections of It's in the Blood! A Documentary History of Linus Pauling, Hemoglobin and Sickle Cell Anemia work together to provide an unusually rich source of information on Pauling's work in blood biochemistry and molecular disease. Navigate between the sections by using either the links on the site's home page or the links at the top of any page within the site. Narrative - The first section tells the story of Linus Pauling's research into the nature of human blood. On the left of each page is a Table of Contents, providing easy navigation from chapter to chapter within the Narrative; in the center is a section of text including links to an array of audio-visual materials and additional contextual information; and on the right are illustrations and quotations that amplify the narrative text. Clicking on any thumbnail opens larger versions of all illustrations. All Documents and Media - The second section provides access to nearly four-hundred primary source documents and media, including letters, manuscripts, diary entries, photographs, audio-visual materials, and published papers. Linus Pauling Day-by-Day - The third section consists of a comprehensive account of all of Pauling's personal and professional endeavors from 1940 to 1949. The information on Linus Pauling Day-by-Day is presented in calendar form, with texts compiled for each day of Pauling's activities during this period, and scanned images of documents accompanying each week of text. Originally launched in March 2005, a revised and expanded version of this website was released in October 2008. Along with a wide range of functionality and description improvements, content additions incorporated into the revision included over 550 pages of new manuscripts, papers and letters, 18 pictures and 11 additional audio excerpts and video clips. |
