Itano writes to thank Pauling for his contributions to Itano's birthday celebration as well as the "chemical elements" section of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

Dec. 22, 1985

Dear Linus,

I appreciate the major role you played in making my birthday celebration a memorable occasion for my family and me, and I thank you will all my heart. I thank you also for your contribution toward the Encyclopedia Brittannica, in which I note that you wrote part of the section in the Chemical Elements. Your biographical sketch states that you left U.C. Santa Barbara to go to Stanford. Rose and I look forward to seeing you again next year.
