The National Medal of Science is the nation's highest scientific honor. Circular medal with image of man bent down at the edge of water writing a mathematical formula in sand and holding a crystal in the other hand. Inscription: "National Medal of Science." Reverse features same water and sand image at bottom plus stars above; inscription: "Awarded by the President of the United States of America to Linus Carl Pauling, 1974."
