The destructive power of man's release of the element uranium exactly as stated as "energy equals matter times the square of the velocity of light" has shocked and terrified the world. Let us examine this fear from two perspectives : let us first look at the moment we are now the present; and then let us look again, this time measuring our view into the direction toward which we are going---the future.
             THE PRESENT
The danger to man today exists in the wide gap that lies between his material or scientific achievements and his spiritual awareness and practice. The margin for error is becoming less and less. Mistakes -- spiritual and ethical mistakes are becoming more and more fatal. The use of atomic energy for destructive purposes at its present development is believed to threaten two thirds of the earth's inhabitants. How did this gap between man's scientific achievements and his spiritual awareness come to be? How did man reach this point in time?
The scientific progress of man has been steady and cumulative; each succeeding generation of scientists building its research upon the ever increasing legacy of the proven physical laws of the universe.
The spiritual awareness of man, however, is an individual achievement struggled for and won by each individual for himself.
