history

29 November 1947

Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists 90 Nassau St. Princeton, N.J.

Gentlemen:

Dr. Einstein's letter of the 21st. has been forwarded to me from Staten Island. I am enclosing the old addresses you have recently used for both my wife and myself, and suggest in the interest of economy that you henceforth send us literature jointly to the following address:

Mr, and Mrs. W. W. Lyman, Jr. 8 Arlington St. Cambridge 40, Mass

Both my wife and I are deeply in accord with Dr. Einstein's plea that a federation of nations be established without delay, with or without Russia's participation at the moment. We believe that many of our friends, given the facts, will also favor such a step. But we likewise agree with Dr. Einstein that only through a greater dissemination of the facts will the public rise to demand that such a step be taken.

I shall not bother you with details of our financials status at this moment. We are absolutely unable to make a substantial contribution, much as we would like to. However, we want to help in any way possible, and therefore I am enclosing a list (recently compiled for use by United World Federalists) of personal friends, many of whom have in the past received from me copies of your previous literature which you sent me in bulk. I am also enclosing two dollars to help defray mailing and printing costs of your current campaign.

Sincerely, [signature] Mr, and Mrs. William W. Lyman, Jr.
