COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT OF WELFARE WESTERN STATE PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTE AND CLINIC O'HARA AND DESOTO STREETS PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA December 26, 1947
Dr. Albert Einstein, Chairman Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists, Inc. 90 Nassau Street Princeton, New Jersey
Dear Doctor Einstein: I have read with great interest your reprint entitled "Atomic War or Peace". I find myself in practically complete agreement with what you say. Especially do I like the sentence in the last paragraph -- "Unless the cause of peace based on law gathers behind it the force and zeal of a religion, it hardly can hope to succeed." As a member of the Society of Friends, I feel that the "deep power of emotion" should show itself in the form of genuine sincerity and deep understanding based upon a non-creedal religion or philosophy of life. It is very important for people to contribute not only money but also their time, intelligence and energy to the cause of peace.
As a member of the Committee on International Relationships of the American Psychiatric Association, I feel that we should work with the atomic scientists toward our common objectives. Since this letter, from the point of view of that committee, is purely unofficial, I suggest that you write to Dr. George H. Stevenson of Ontario Hospital, London, Ontario concerning ways in which your committee of atomic scientists can collaborate with organized psychiatry. This is especially important this year since the International Congress of Mental Health is to be held in London in August, 1948. Cooperation with the Ward Health Organization and with U.N.E.S.C.O. will be discussed there, as well as what psychiatrists can contribute to the understanding of psychological causes of war, and their prevention.
Sincerely, Robert A. Clark, M.D. Clinical Director
