Attention Mary E. Ray, Secretary.

Dear Miss Ray:

I just arrived home this morning, and was pleased to find your letter of May 5, with the additional literature enclosed. Thank you for this, and for the list of materials available from the National Committee.

My equation, as completed by Dr. Einstein, is as follows:

Man + atomic power + a reasonable and human attitude = Safety of man

Dr. Einstein suggested that “Atomic Power” could be taken out of the equation. As you recall, I mentioned this to you, and was a bit puzzled by it. However, on further thought, I believe that I now see his point. In other words, if Man shows a “Reason-able Attitude”, Atomic Power really has no bearing on his safety, because it would no longer constitute any threat. This “Reason-able Attitude” is very closely related to what you said about the high degree of Man’s intelligent endowment, and his failure to be-have as one might expect of such a creature.

There are one or two points now, which I am sorry that I did not take just another moment to ask Dr. Einstein; but of course, I was a bit flustered, and had the feeling that my interview should not last more than a minute or two. These are the questions:

1. What, in a few words, would be Dr. Einstein’s suggestion, as to means for developing such an Attitude on the part of Man?

2. Does the achievement of this end involve a change in the “formula” of Human Nature?

Would it be possible for you to get his ear for a moment or two, and pass on to me his comments on these points? I have read his tract, “Only Then Shall We Find Courage”; but I think that a few personal comments as they relate to this factor which he suggested for my equation would be enlightening. In the brief and
