Dr. Albert Einstein, Chairman The Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists 90 Nassau Street Princeton, New Jersey
Dear Dr. Einstein:
In reply to our contribution to the fund of the Emergency Committee we have received your letter which we deeply appreciate. I did not write a letter at the time of making the contribution, and I feel the need to express myself briefly on the subject.
This organization is composed of a small group of people devoted to the application of psychological techniques and principles to the problems of business and industry. In this situation we lean very heavily on the constructive work of men in academic situations, and our value derives very largely from scientific work to which we are unable to make significant contributions. Since we are profiting from the application of Science which we have not built, I feel that we have a peculiar responsibility to share in the social obligations which you scientists are now attempting to carry. Temperamentally, we here are not business people or leaders of social movements any more than you are but the threat of another war takes precedence over our personal inclinations.
If there is anything we could do which would contribute to your purpose, we should love to be asked. Please do not feel called upon to reply unless there is some request to be made of us.
Yours very truly, [signature Leroy N Vernon] LEROY N. VERNON
