Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists Room 28, 90 Nassau Street Princeton, N.J.

Dear Sirs:-

It has occurred to me in response to your solicitation for contributions that I should send the proceeds from the sale of the first $25.00 Defense Bond which I purchased in May 1942. This and four other such bonds I bought for defense purposes. I am convinced however that unless the people of the world can join together to banish war and the atomic bomb, that these five little bonds of mine will have no lasting value for me or for my family. It therefore seems to me entirely fitting that this small defense bond should be used for what is in effect the attempted defense of civilization.

When you need your second million dollars you may put me down for a second bond and likewise for a third, fourth, and fifth. I offer this contribution willingly with a feeling of confidence and hope in your undertaking. Yours is an unbelievably difficult job and yet you must not fail.

Sincerely, [Signature George Van Riper] George Van Riper
