Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists Albert Einstein, Chairman, Dear Professor Einstein, As I remember receiving a letter from you in Sept. 1945 in reply to one of mine concerning the atomic bomb, it has now again come about that we are writing on this question. That affair caused me tremendous shock of shame and horror at belonging to a nation that could do such things, and it further more almost completely undermined my fait in men of science as the top- most men of the human race devoted to its sincere service. These effects are still with me and probably will continue to be, but they are somewhat modified by subsequent events, and by the efforts of these scientists in the opposite dir-ection.
