Dear Mr. Einstein;
March 12, 1947
Enclosed find a check for $5.00 as a small contribution toward the fund for the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists. I am very proud to have the honor of recieving a letter with your personal signature. I too, was an immigrant to this grand country, however as a pre-school child in 1907 and my husband came from Greece In 1905. We are both college people through our own efforts and hard work. Good fortune has been our lot. We have 3 sons , one has been at the University of Chicago for three years and two are in high school. As a local branch member of the American Association of University Women, and particularly interested in International Relations I am using my influence to foster and perpetuate the ideals of our beloved President F.D. Roosevelt and is deciples, such as David Lilienthal, whom we have the pleasure to call "friend", (since he visits his brother in LaPorte occasionally). As I told him in a recent letter, we hope and pray for his success, and allow me to add, we thank God for men like you. May you live a long, healthy and useful life! As chairman of our International Relations study group I have made a monthly resume of the bulletins, from the Committee of Atomic Information as well as Atomic Scientists. We are Also making a study of the Lilienthal report on International Control of Atomic Energy. We have in La Porte a promising young scientist, 18 years old, who has ambitions and abilities of a potential Nobel prize winner a few years hence. He has already recieved National honors from the Gilbert Chemical Co. for some research in chemistry. He is Fred Menenko, 449 PineLake Ave. He is entering the University of Chicago in September, where he looks forward to work with physisists on his pet theories. A Note to him from you will be greatly cherished, and may bring you another small contribution to the million dollar fund. The movie "THE BEGINNING OG THE END" is showing here this week. It is making a profound influence and really awakening us to the full potentialities of atomic energy. I am sure that in a concerted effort towards creating a better understanding among all peoples, we shall enjoy the fruits of a better world. Most Sincerely Yours Mrs Leon Philon
