Dublin Core

Title

Elmer Taylor and Others on the Harris-Taylor land

Description

In this video, Elmer Taylor and others share their family histories and their relationship to the Harris-Taylor land. The interview begins with talk about the Harris and Taylor families, whom Taylor and Gary Chapman note have owned the property for generations. Chapman and Taylor both mention a few family members and their roles in the property's history. They reminisce about old houses that used to be on the land and the special meanings that those locations hold for their families. Starker employee Dick Powell also speaks to the history of the land, including the indigenous communities who used to inhabit the area. Barte Starker and Bond Starker likewise lend their thoughts on the history of the land, as passed down by their father, T.J. Starker.

The conversation then delves into the land's features, including mention of an orchard that once existed there; Taylor recall the thriving apple trees and other fruit-bearing plants that were present. He also discusses the property's role in logging, sawmills, and forestry. Taylor mentions how his family contributed to the logging industry, and remarks that he feels a strong connection to the land. Chapman likewise explains that, over time, the family has focused on reforestation efforts and sustainable land management, and that the Starker Forest Company now oversees the property. Both Chapman and Taylor express admiration for the Starker Forests Company.

Later, Wayne Harris shares his memories of the Harris-Taylor land and his family connection to the location. The interview concludes with Elmer’s comments on history of the property adjacent to the Eddy Cemetery at Eddyville, Oregon.
