Title

Andrew and Dan Gellatly Oral History Interview

Description

In this interview, Andrew and Dan Gellatly discuss their lives and experiences in the logging industry. Andrew begins by describing his childhood and experiences during the first half of the twentieth century. He discusses the chores he was expected to help with as a boy and the general conditions in western Oregon at the time. His nephew Dan then recounts his own childhood experiences and notes how Oregon had changed between the time Andrew was born and the time Dan was born.

The conversation then turns to a discussion about their respective families. Dan talks about his children and gives a brief overview of their lives and interests. Andrew describes his wife and children, and reminisces about his daughter who had passed away.

The Gellatlys then reflect on their involvement in the timber industry over the years. Andrew describes his first job at the Fred Alberson Lumber Company, and both he and Dan remark on the types of equipment used in logging and how that equipment has changed over time. They recall some of their most memorable jobs, including a project near the Marys River Grange and one at Siuslaw National Forest. Dan then describes the work they’ve done on their own property and mentions some of the plans they have for the future. The interview concludes with a brief demonstration by Dan of how to take a log off a tree.

Andrew Gellatly was born in 1925 in Corvallis, Oregon and raised in nearby Philomath, where graduated from high school. From there, he began a career in logging and continued in that line of work until he retired. In 1951 he married Aileen (Jondhal) Gellatly, with whom he had three children. He was a member of the Marys River Grange for more than sixty years, serving as grange master in his twenties. He passed away in 2010.

Dan Gellatly, a nephew of Andrew Gellatly, was born in 1960 in Corvallis, Oregon. He graduated from Philomath High School in 1978 and, shortly thereafter, married Sandy (Gurdie) Gellatly, with whom he had three children. Throughout his life he also worked in the logging industry.
