Cliff Trow Oral History Interview
Description
In this interview, Cliff Trow begins by discussing his upbringing in Kansas, and his educational pathway in Kansas, Colorado, and lastly at Oregon State University. He weighs the pros and cons of being a high school history teacher, especially one at a bigger school than he was accustomed to in Kansas. Trow discusses the changes he saw at Oregon State University during his time there, and the successes that many of his students have had, as well as those who have gone into the legislature.
He then goes on to describe his experience of running for the Oregon Senate, and his thoughts on the importance of the "right" people being in office so that the government may be productive. Next he shares his thoughts on campaigning, and meeting people along the way. He comments on how much money is spent on campaigns, and how money likely distorts campaigns and their legitimacy.
Trow goes on to address many of the issues faced in the Senate, and the committee dynamics that impacted the types of final decisions that could be made. He shares a few of his accomplishments, especially those related to the state libraries, that he is most proud of completing during his years in office.
The interview concludes with notes on retirement. In this, Trow speaks of his work with the Hunger Relief Task Force in Salem, Oregon and other issues he intends to continue to be involved with.
