Peggy Allworth Oral History Interview (2 of 2)

Dublin Core

Title

Peggy Allworth Oral History Interview (2 of 2)

Description

In this interview, Peggy Allworth and interviewer Jennifer Lee review Allworth's OAC scrapbook, which is filled with photographs from her college days. The scrapbook spurs conversations about many of the objects that it holds and incites discussions about Librarian Ida Kidder, Dean of Women Mary Fawcett, President William Jasper Kerr, General Ulysses McAlexander, Allworth's family and friends from college, and the activities of her sorority, Gamma Phi. The scrapbook also prompts memories of Allworth's participation in competitive swimming at OAC, as well as hiking and dance.

Allworth then shares her opinion of the qualities that a good housewife should exhibit by detailing the tasks that she watched her mother perform. She then explains how no girl ever considered having a career in her day, and stresses that there weren't any married students either.

At the conclusion of the session Allworth describes how contemporary culture is different from her youth and, in particular, her war-time experiences. (She talks about life during World War I at various points during the interview, as it took place during her college years and deeply impacted her time at OAC.)
