Beulah and Helen Gilkey interviewed by Betty Lynd Thompson, with additional comments by Harriet Moore

Dublin Core

Title

Beulah and Helen Gilkey interviewed by Betty Lynd Thompson, with additional comments by Harriet Moore

Description

The primary focus of this interview is the early history of physical education and physical culture at Oregon Agricultural College. In this, Thompson asks the Gilkey sisters to share their memories of physical education classwork and other opportunities for physical recreation afforded to female students at OAC at the beginning of the 20th century. The interview likewise touches upon intramural and intercollegiate athletic events, compulsory swimming, faculty involved with physical education, and facilities available to women of that period.

In her comments, Harriet Moore discusses the campus bowling alley, Alpha Hall, faculty members Ellen Chamberlin, Helen Crawford, Miriam Thayer and Edna Cocks, and the recreational facilities including the Mitchell Playhouse. Moore also speaks to the culture of canoeing that prevailed in the early 20th century as well as other uses of the Marys River during that time.
