Suzy Hartman Oral History Interview
Description
Suzanne Hartman describes her upbringing in rural Glendale Oregon after her family moved across the country from Chicago, Illinois. She describes what it was like to attend a small school where her parents worked in the English department. She also recollects what it was like to have dreams of a higher education after graduation, unlike many of her classmates. She recounts her time living on her family's farm, training and riding horses and her young aspirations to be a veterinarian.
From there, Hartman outlines her choice to attend OSU and describes her time moving away from her family and living in the dorms. She illustrates her living situations at OSU, the social activities and the things she did for fun, such as physical activity classes, bowling, and training horses. She mentions the very few differences she experienced between men and women at OSU but that it was difficult for her to move to a new place away from home. She characterizes her friend group at OSU and her favorite things about being an undergraduate at OSU.
Hartman discusses her experience as a graduate student at OSU. She points out that she was in one of the very first veterinary classes because the veterinary school was fairly new. She describes a few of her favorite things about attending OSU’s veterinary program such as her classmates, friends, and the nurturing environment she got to be a part of.
Next, Hartman talks about her first few jobs after graduating. She points out many things she learned from finally working in the field but also t how some of her male coworkers weren’t able to comprehend at first how qualified a woman could be as a veterinarian. She recounts some of her experiences with people not understanding that a woman, such as herself, could handle the same work as her male colleagues. She goes into detail with many stories of how she never ever let anybody tell her she couldn't do something. She gained respect by working hard and showing people that she was a qualified and respectable veterinarian. She finally discusses her volunteer work as a firefighter and rescue diver.
After that, she moves on to how she “divorced” her job by quitting large animal medicine, stopped being on call, and had a family. She outlines that though there are challenges of having a family and an important job, she finds both to be rewarding. She also points out how her family was considered “non-traditional” since her husband stayed at home to raise their children while she worked. She finally talks about her current life in rural Oregon and recounts how similar it is to how she grew up.
