Letter from Linus Pauling to Ava Helen Pauling. April 12, 1945.
Writing from a train travelling across the country, Pauling writes of a rumor circulating that Franklin Delano Roosevelt died earlier in the day. He briefly discusses the consequences of the president's death, including the promotion of Harry S. Truman. He also describes an "amusing experience" regarding reserved rooms at a hotel in which Pauling was required to lodge with five other people in order to accommodate his fellow researchers. Transcript.
