Subject: Dimensions of the α-β transformation in proteins

The repeat distance of α-keratin is 5.1 Å. In the transformation to the β form, α-keratin elongates 100 percent, and gives an X-ray repeat of 6.8 Å. (2/3 of 10.2). On supercontraction α-keratin undergoes a reduction of about 30 to 50 percent in its length defending on conditions.
