Interview with Linus Pauling. October 14, 1992. Interview by Thomas Hager for use in "Force of Nature: The Life of Linus Pauling,"
(Simon & Schuster, 1995).
Linus Pauling: Todd told me that when the paper came out in 1950, Bragg rushed over to the Chemistry
Department and said, "Here, I came to talk with you about this problem a year or two
years ago or a year and a half ago. Why didn't you tell me that the peptide group
is planar?" And Todd said, "Well, I have a clear memory that I did. I distinctly remember
that I told you that this carbon-nitrogen bond had some double-bond character." So
that just didn't mean anything to Bragg. He didn't know that the double bond character
meant planarity.
