Interview with Verner Schomaker. February 25, 1991. Interview by Thomas Hager for use in "Force of Nature: The Life of Linus Pauling,"
(Simon & Schuster, 1995).
Verner Schomaker: I think the last time I was there [the Salton Sea, California] was Pearl Harbor Day.
Some of us were out there for the weekend and we came back on Sunday morning, I suppose
it was, if it was a Sunday. And then stopped for gasoline and breakfast and Gene
Eyster, Eugene Underson Eyster, came out - and I had stopped to buy gas for my car
'cause I didn't have any. And he came out and said that a couple of Japanese had managed
to sneak in a couple of carriers near Pearl Harbor and then raided the place, but
that was all they knew. That, I think, was the first report on the radio that he
heard that...it turned out to be quite a lot different from that.
