Joseph Koepfli: Linus went back to deliver a lecture at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in, I believe, '39. And Linus got ill back there and it was diagnosed in New York at the Rockefeller Hospital as nephritis - and you had a five year expectancy with no exceptions at that time. And how he got to Addis, I don't know, probably the Rockefeller people sent him to Addis. But Addis just devoted himself for a year to coming down every week on the train for the day and back that night on the train.

Thomas Hager: He was up in San Francisco Bay Area, is that right?

Joseph Koepfli: Yeah. He was U.C. Medical. And, I don't know, this is my understanding of it, he varied his eating program from week to week. He just devoted himself and pulled him through. I don't think there were very many exceptions to well diagnosed nephritis, surviving five years in those days. So, I think Linus would certainly lay his life to Addis.
