Linus Pauling: The course that I follow is one apparently designed to keep me from being involved in highly competitive activities. If I'm working on a problem and make some contribution to it and then other people begin working on the same problem, I usually move on to something else. For example, the hereditary hemolytic anemias. And I stopped work in the field as soon as a good number of other people had begun work in the field because I thought whatever discoveries there are to be made will be made by other people and they can do it. Why don't I look around for something to do that other people aren't working on?
