Irmgard Lenel 812 Eleventh Street Santa Monica, California August 11, 1947 Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists Room 28, 90 Nassau Street Princeton, New Jersey Gentlemen: I have read your letter of August 6th and the enclosed material with very great interest and I am enclosing my small contribution of $2.00, regretting that it is not possible for me to send you more. I read with particular interest about the educational efforts that you and the organizations cooperating with you are making, and if I may, I would like to make just one suggestion in this connection: I fee that it is of uppermost importance to try to make people here understand the Russian position, as far as this is possible, through explaining Russia's historic development, (including the fact that Russians have never known democracy in the sense that we do, and that they cannot be expected to adhere to it now, all of a sudden), their tradional suspicions and fears and the reasons therefor, her geographic situation, etc. I seriously believe that a broad part of the educational effort should be devoted to this, just as Dr. Einstein commented on this with beautiful words in his radio interview with Cord Meyer and Raymond Swing on July 17th. Incidentally, I was very unhappy that I was not able to listen to this interview completely, and if it should at all be possible to obtain a transcript of this broadcast, I would appreciate it very much if you could send me one.
