Gentlemen: This is a response to the telegram and letter from Dr. Einstein concerning aid for the program of public education which you rightly [illegible] as so critically important at this time. I am enclosing a check for 5 00 which is more than I can really afford at this particular moment. What prompts me to send this perhaps unduly lengthy statement with this check is the feeling that the men who form the committee need awareness of the validity of the principle that the democratic or humanistic society which they want to assure for humanity, by suitable control of atomic energy, must have an adequate economic foundation. and that such a foundation is not be obtained by were legislative control of a capitalistic economy.
