4. having such women as Pearl Buck in the nation! I am well informed for the reasons of this backwardness, both on men's & women's part. In Switzerland they still cannot vote, because that question is submitted to the common polls, & not to an electorate as here, & the ordinary man will never resign his sex superiority if he can help it, as Edmund Burke well explains in his essays. For Burke we Americans have some respect even naming our schools after him, as I taught in one for 15 yrs. Finally I resigned when it went negro in Chicago, as 3 yrs of that sort of work was too strenuous.
