Abstract

The Joshua Robert Akers Photograph Collection consists of eleven photographic prints collected by alumnus Akers that depict group shots of Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) students, all of which feature Akers. Akers graduated from OAC in 1917 with a BS in agriculture.

Scope and Content Notes

The Joshua Robert Akers Photograph Collection consists of eleven photographic prints collected by alumnus Akers that depict group shots of Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) students, all of which feature Akers. The groups portrayed in the images are identified as the OAC Cadet Band and the Arcadia Club. Among the photographs is a panoramic print of the OAC Band at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, California.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Joshua Robert Akers studied agriculture at Oregon Agricultural College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1917. During his time at OAC, Akers was involved with the Arcadia Club, the Cadet Band, the OAC Chemists Society, and the College Orchestra. For the Cadet Band he played french horn. Akers went on to work for the aluminum industry in a number of facilities throughout the United States: Illinois, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and South Carolina. For his administrative role in managing an aluminum plant during World War II, Akers received recognition by the U.S. Department of Defense for his civilian contribution to the war effort. Akers died in 1965.
