Abstract

The James W. Callaway Papers consist of two scrapbooks and a service album for Company member autographs from Callaway's military training at Fort Lewis.

Scope and Content Notes

The scrapbooks within this collection include photographs of fellow cadets, friends and family members, dance cards for OAC dances, receipts, correspondence, postcards, newspaper clippings, materials pertaining to the OAC Wastina Club, a commencement program, brochures for the OAC Military Tournament and the Annual Junior Vaudeville show, Callaway's high school diploma, and a freshman "beanie." Loose materials that have fallen out of the scrapbooks have been placed in envelopes and folders and identified by subject.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Born in Brownsville, Oregon in 1906, James Callaway attended OAC from 1921 to 1925, graduating with a degree in business. After college, Callaway found employment in the grocery trade in Salem, Oregon, and served during World War II, later becoming the President of a local chapter of the Patriotic Orders. Callaway died in Salem in 1969.
