Abstract

The Joanne Tynon Papers document Tynon’s research in the area of outdoor recreation and tourism and her career as a faculty member at Oregon State University.  Tynon joined the faculty of the College of Forestry in 1997 and retired in 2017.

Scope and Content Notes

The Joanne Tynon Papers document Tynon’s research in the area of outdoor recreation and tourism and her career as a faculty member in the Oregon State University College of Forestry.  The collection includes a curriculum vita, surveys, and publications.

The bulk of the collection consists of publications written by Tynon in collaboration with her graduate students, other Oregon State University faculty, and colleagues at other institutions and organizations.  These publications document her qualitative and quantitative research on natural resource-based recreation and tourism issues, recreation planning and management, and crime and law enforcement on public recreation lands.  These publications include a series of reports prepared for the U.S. Forest Service that evaluate the perceptions of the roles, responsibilities, and issues entailed in the jobs of U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service law enforcement and investigations (LEI) personnel.  Other publications address crime on public lands and the impact on recreationists.

A series of reports on recreation management and carrying capacity at three sites in Hawaii – Pupukea Marine Life Conservation District; Kailua Beach Park; and Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area – were written by Tynon and other researchers at Oregon State University and the University of Hawaii for the Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources.

The work of her graduate students on urban parks and urban forestry management and agritourism are reflected in surveys developed for those studies and the resulting publications.

Of note in the collection are reports and publications documenting women in natural resource professions, crimes against women on public lands, and the role of women in woodlands ownership and management.

The curriculum vita includes a list of her publications, descriptions of the courses that Tynon taught and developed at Oregon State, and summaries of her research projects and scholarship.
