Abstract

The Virgina Esther Simmons Sewing Book was assembled by alumna Virginia Esther Simmons as an assignment for a home economics class. Simmons graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1896.

The Virginia Esther Simmons Sewing Book was assembled by alumna Virginia Esther Simmons as an assignment for a home economics class. The sewing book was compiled in 1896 and is composed of samples of stitches and buttonholes.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Virginia Esther Simmons was born on March 17, 1872 in Douglas County, Oregon. After graduating from Oregon Agricultural College with a degree in home economics in 1896, Simmons pursued a longtime career in teaching for school districts in Corvallis, Roseburg, and Fresno, California. Retiring in 1939, Simmons returned to settle in Corvallis 5 years later where she became a fixture in a number of community organizations, such as the Corvallis Garden Club and the Corvallis League of Women Voters. Simmons was also active in OAC alumni gatherings and regularly attended golden jubilee celebrations up to age of 100. She died in 1973.
