Abstract

The Environmental Health Sciences Center Records document interdisciplinary reserach in environmental toxicology at Oregon State University. The Environmental Health Sciences Center was established in 1967 with funding from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

Scope and Content Notes

Series I, Introductory Booklet, consists of a packet of materials assembled in 1975 to illustrate the programs and operations of the Center. Series II, Progress Reports, consists of summary and annual reports of the Center and specific programs, from 1964-1996. The first report pertains to a program in place when the Center was established. Series III, Special Reports, consists of planning, program, meeting, and project reports, primarily from the 1970s. Series IV consists of policy /historical correspondence from 1975 and 1976. Series V includes the Center's executive committee meeting minutes from 1967- 1970. Series VI contains grant and research proposals for the Center and component programs, and dates from 1966-1970. Series VII, Special Events Records, contains reports and paper abstracts of conferences attended by Center staff or hosted by the Center in the early 1970s.

The publications were issued in 1968-1974.  They include a 1973 list of environmental science classes offered at Oregon State University; lectures given in 1972 and 1974 on environmental health sciences and human ecology topics; symposium proceedings from 1968-1969;  two 1974 task force reports; and the Center’s newsletter for 1969-1970.  The symposium proceedings pertain to  microchemical environmental pollutants (1968) and the biological impact of pesticides in the environment (1969).  The lectures were given by Lawrence E. Hinkle, Jr. (1972); Richard D. O’Brien (March 1974); and Glen E. Gordon (August 1974).

Biographical / Historical Notes

The Environmental Health Sciences Center was established in 1967 to provide coordination and stimulation of interdisciplinary environmental health research and training between OSU colleges and departments. The Center is funded primarily by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and the major field of research is environmental toxicology. The director reports to the Dean of Research.

Directors have included Virgil Freed (1967-1981) and Donald J. Reed (1982-1997).
