Abstract

The College of Agricultural Sciences Photographs were taken or assembled by College staff and faculty to document the Oregon State University's academic and research programs in agriculture; Branch Experiment Stations in Oregon; faculty, students, and alumni; international programs; and special events, conferences, and workshops. The bulk of the images are b/w prints and color slides; the collection also includes nitrate and glass negatives; some film negatives; and a few color prints.

Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Scope and Content Notes

The College of Agricultural Sciences Photographs document Oregon State University's academic and research programs in agriculture; Branch Experiment Stations in Oregon; College faculty, students, and alumni; international programs; and special events, conferences, and workshops. The collection includes glass negatives of crops, plants and other agricultural topics that may be have been used for teaching as well as images taken in 1913 by bacteriologist Emile Pernot of farms and slaughter houses in Benton County. The photographs of Experiment Stations document facilities, windstorm damage at the North Willamette Experiment Station, and views of branch stations near Astoria and in Moro County.

The largest component of the collection is a group of about 900 color slides, many taken in 2001, that depict students and faculty participating in instruction and research activities and include images of farms, research facilities, class field trips, university events, and students and faculty.

Many photographs of individual faculty, staff, and students are included as well as faculty, student, and alumni groups. Images of attendees at conferences and workshops as well as the Oregon Dairy Manufacturers Association meeting are part of the collection.

Photographs of the Kasetsart University campus in Thailand; classrooms, laboratories, and other facilities; and Oregon State faculty, Kasetsart University faculty and administrators, and Thai students document the cooperative program between Kasetsart University and Oregon State College in the 1950s and 1960s.

Many of the photos from the 1980s were taken or assembled by the staff of the E.R. Jackman Foundation; they depict Jackman Foundation Board members and staff; College administrators; awards presentations and special events; and students and faculty.

Photographers include Robert W. Henderson, Emile Pernot, J.D. Vertrees, and Dennis Wolverton.

The largest component of the collection is color slides; the remainder is primarily b/w prints. The collection also includes nitrate and glass negatives, b/w film negatives, and color prints.

An addition the the College of Agricultural Sciences Photographs (Accession 2013:092) is made up of photographs documenting College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) staff, students, and various events organized by the college. Numbering about 1050 images in total (550 prints, 420 negatives, 80 slides), the bulk of these photographs depict students in portrait and group shots, many of whom were recipients of CAS awards/honors and members of the groups OSU Agricultural Ambassadors and Future Farmers of America. Also depicted are views of the the award receptions and dinners where these students were honored. Other photographs in this transfer portray classroom instruction, CAS staff, agricultural research projects, and JARSI program participants. Among the CAS staff depicted in these images include: Roger Fendall, Wilbur Cooney, E.C. Stevenson, and Manning Becker. The slides are part of the presentation: "Strength Through Diversity: The Story of Oregon Agriculture."

Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Biographical / Historical Notes

In 1868, the Oregon Legislature designated Corvallis College as the state's agricultural college, and in 1870 Corvallis College began its agricultural curriculum. The next year the college acquired its first farm (now Lower Campus), purchased for the school by the citizens of Benton County. In 1873 the college issued its first agricultural research bulletin, and a decade later the college established a Department of Agriculture, which was the first in the Pacific Northwest. The Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station was established on the campus farm in 1888, and in 1894 the first Farmers' Short Course was offered.

In 1908, the General Department of Agriculture was reorganized into a professional School of Agriculture, and included departments in Agronomy, Animal Husbandry, and Poultry Husbandry. Additional departments were added in the 1910s and 1920s. By 1928, the School included ten departments, and degree programs were offered in General Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Landscape Architecture, and Horticultural Products. The School established a Ph.D. program in 1932, and conferred is first doctorate in 1935. From 1931 until 1965, the dean of the School of Agriculture also served as director of both the Agricultural Experiment Station and the Extension Service. In 1983, the name of the School was changed to the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Deans have included A. B. Cordley, 1908-1931; William A. Schoenfeld, 1931-1950; F. E. Price, 1950-1965; Wilbur T. Cooney, 1965-1979; Ernest J. Briskey, 1979-1987; Roy G. Arnold, 1987-1991; Conrad J. Weiser, 1991-1994; and Thayne R. Dutson, 1994-2008.

Emile F. Pernot was hired by Oregon Agricultural College in 1890 to teach photography and take photographs for the Experiment Station. Through his pioneering work in microphotography, he developed an interest in bacteriology, and was named the first chair of the Bacteriology Deparment in 1900. In 1910 Pernot was named bacteriologist for the city of Portland.

The E.R. Jackman Foundation, an affiliate of the Oregon State University Foundation, supports the academic and research programs of the College.

We acknowledge that materials in SCARC collections and the language that describes them may be harmful. We are actively working to address our descriptive practices; for more information please see our SCARC Anti-Racist Actions Statement online.

SCARC describes the contents of its collections using the language and terminology of the collections themselves. Since culturally acceptable terminology shifts over time, some of the terms that appear in these materials are currently outdated or offensive.

Within this historic usage, it has been applied to place names, and scientific or colloquial names for plants. In this collection, the term "squaw" is used in the context of the Squaw Butte Experiment Station. This station is now known as the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center.

In order to provide historical context and to enable standardized searching and access across our collecctions, we have retained the use of this phrase in the collection description.
