Abstract

The Betty E. Hawthorne Collection consists of certificates and awards, speeches, clippings, and photographs of Hawthorne, former Dean of the OSU School of Home Economics.

Scope and Content Notes

This collection includes a photograph album of Hawthorne's 1984 trip to Korea, a scrapbook of clippings and letters of appreciation presented to her by School of Home Economics staff at her retirement in 1983, and a scrapbook of supporting and congratulatory letters regarding the American Home Economics Association Foundation Distinguished Service Award. It also includes a report of Hawthorne's receipt of the American Home Economics Association Inner City Fellowship in 1969 and materials pertaining to her July 1974 trip to Japan as part of an exchange visit of home economists sponsored by Johnson Wax.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Betty Eileen Hawthorne was born on November 22, 1920 in Seattle, Washington, to Harry Albert and Marcia (Thompson) Hawthorne.

Hawthorne completed her Bachelors of Science, and subsequent Masters degree, at the University of Washington in 1941 and 1944, respectively. Between 1944 and 1946, she contributed to the war effort by serving in the Women's  Reserve, or WAVES.

In 1946, she was hired at OSU as an instructor in Foods and Nutrition; she was promoted to associate professor in 1955, a year after completing a PhD at Michigan State University. Hawthorne was made full professor in 1962, and served as the Dean of the School of Home Economics from 1965 to 1983. In 1987, she received the OSU Distinguished Service Award.

Betty Hawthorne died November 9, 1990.
