Abstract

The Pacific Northwest Seed and Nursery Catalog Collection consists of catalogs published by nurseries and seed companies, primarily in Oregon and Washington.

Scope and Content Notes

The Pacific Northwest Seed and Nursery Catalog Collection consists of catalogs published by nurseries and seed companies, primarily in Oregon and Washington. The catalogs feature vegetable, herb, and flower seeds; fruit trees and vines; and perennial and native plants. The catalogs include a number of varieties (especially of tomatoes) developed by Oregon State University researchers, such as James Baggett.

The collection includes extensive runs of catalogs for Nichols Garden Nursery and the Territorial Seed Company. Catalogs are also included from Abundant Life Seeds, Deep Diversity, Earth's Rising Nursery, Fall Creek Farm and Nursery, Forest Farm, Goodwin Creek Gardens, Greengable Farms, Irish Eyes and Garden City Seeds, Jackson and Perkins, Kalmia Farm, Nature's Garden, Northwoods Wholesale Nursery, One Green World, Oregon Exotics Rare Fruit Nursery, Peace Seeds, Raintree Nursery, Russell Graham Purveyor of Plants, Thyme Garden Herb Company, West Coast Seeds, Wild Garden Seed, and Zenner Brothers Seed Company.

The catalogs were assembled by Lawrence A. and Rebecca Landis.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Lawrence A. Landis, and his wife Rebecca, assembled these catalogs in the course of developing and maintaining their home garden and orchard.

The Nursery and Seed Trade Catalogues Collection (MSS Seed) consists of nearly 1,700 catalogs, for the time period 1832-1966, that are national and international in scope. The Horticulture Department Records (RG 187) include extensive materials pertaining to research and extension programs for vegetable crops, fruits and nuts, nurseries, and ornamental plants. The Special Collections and Archives Research Center collections include the papers of several Horticulture Department faculty, including the James R. Baggett Papers (MSS Baggett).
