Abstract

The Carl Gilmore Papers consist of materials pertaining to Gilmore's participation on the Oregon State College football team in the late 1920s. The collection also includes items related to Gilmore's military service during and immediately after World War II.

Scope and Content Notes

This collection includes game programs, newspaper clippings, photographs, and telegrams. It also includes excerpts from letters that Gilmore wrote to his wife that describe his experiences as a Major in the armed forces and in guarding the Japanese military command during war crimes trials held from August 1945 to January 1946.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Graduating in 1930 with a degree in Education, Carl Gilmore played fullback for the OSC football team that, in 1928, was the first western college team to play on the eastern seaboard. A member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, Gilmore was active in a number of honorary societies and served on the Interfraternity Council. Gilmore went on to teach high school in Redding, California where he also coached the football team.
