The Ray S. Hewitt Collection consists of a book, Engines and the Engineman: The Human Side of Railroading, written by Hewitt. A limited number of copies were printed and distributed after his death. The book is a compilation of the experiences of a Southern Pacific engineer, Steve Woodson, whom Hewitt befriended in the mid-1970s.
An addition to the Hewitt Collection (Accession 2001:081) consists of photographs and instructional materials generated by Hewitt as a Professor of English. The B/W photographic prints number approximately 79 images and depict classroom scenes during English exams, spring commencement ceremonies, a football game in Parker Stadium, campus scenes, and an English Dept. farewell party for the Martin couple. Also in this accession is a 5-part self-instructional English composition program produced by the English Dept. Hewitt headed the committee which coordinated and wrote the program.
