Also included are photographs taken by Department of Animal Husbandry faculty that depict various sheep farms throughout Oregon.

Scope and Content Notes

The Animal Science Department Records contain a variety of materials related to the department including research documentation and data, livestock judging teams, correspondence, notes, committee meeting minutes, conference proceedings, reports, articles reprints, student papers, and pedigree documentation. Course materials for a Dairy Production class are also contained in the collection. This set includes lecture schedules, reading materials, and notes from Professor Lloyd Swanson. Documents concerning Oregon Agricultural College's dairy cattle herd and photographs taken by the Animal Husbandry Department are also housed here.

Accession 2009:019 is made up of a record book maintained by OAC Herdsman Lon Rycraft that documents Oregon Agricultural College's dairy cattle herd. The diary reflects birth, death, and breeding information about the herd from 1907 to 1920. The book lists the cows/calves by name and number. Included inside the book is a recipe for the feed mixture given to the cattle.

Accession 2009:087 contains property records for three land parcels in Lake County, Oregon that are currently part of the Harvey Ranch. The deeds were issued by the U.S. General Land Office as donation land claims to William Harvey, Milton Riggs, and J. S. Woolery.

In 1987 Glenn and Mildred Harvey, both Oregon State University graduates, made a gift of their 97,000-acre southeastern Oregon ranch to OSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences. Today the property in Paisley continues to function as both a working ranch and a teaching and research laboratory, where OSU students and faculty study rangeland and watershed management.

Accession 2010:013 consists of photographs taken by Department of Animal Husbandry faculty Oran Nelson, E. L. Potter, D. E. Richards, and R. E. Reynolds that document sheep farms throughout Oregon in such locales as Echo, Ontario, Heppner, La Grande, Fossil, and Carlton. There are also shots of the sheep barns on campus and several sheep shearing operations in Wyoming. Among the activities and places reflected in these images are sheep shearing, lambing, grazing ranges, feeding yards, judgment at the State Fair, Foothills Field Day, and the packaging of sheared wool.

Accession 2012:048 consists of course reading packets for Dairy Production classes (ANS 421/521 and 439/539) that feature lecture schedules and handwritten notes by Animal Sciences Professor Lloyd Swanson. Also included as a part of this accession is documentation from a seminar on writing intensive courses at OSU. The seminar packet contains a sample writing assignment from an Avian Embryo Class (ANS 321).

Accession 2012:058 consists of materials generated and collected by the Animal Sciences Department that primarily document research but also pertain to the annual Diamond Pioneer Registry Award, experiment station buildings, and the college livestock judging teams. Making up over half of this transfer, the files reflecting research activities contain a combination of research data, correspondence, notes, committee minutes, conference proceedings, reports, article reprints, student papers, and pedigree documentation. Lambs, sheep, dairy cattle, swine, turkeys, and beef cattle are the subjects of this research. The student papers reflect work by both graduates and undergraduates. Among the topics addressed in these papers include: selenium poisoning, a livestock program on a school farm, vitamin D in animal nutrition, a cattle feeding regimen, and the historical development of the Oregon cattle industry. Numbering 98 photographs in total (91 prints and 7 negatives), the images depict livestock judging teams, sheep shearing demonstrations, the campus poultry farm, views of cattle on campus grounds, and shots of various livestock (swine, sheep, cattle) managed by the university. There are also images of lambs and ewes that were part of an unidentified study in a photograph album. Ribbons awarded to OSC Livestock Judging Teams in 1952 and 1953 were also found in this accession.
