The Extension and Experiment Station Communications Photograph Collection consists of about 25,500 images generated by Experiment Station staff. These images were used in publications such as Oregon's Agricultural Progress and Pacific Northwest Bulletins as well as news releases, poster presentations and displays. The images depict a variety of OSU research projects, Experiment Station branch facilities, portraits of OSU staff, Extension and Experiment Station-sponsored events, and animal-oriented topics.
Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital. Reference scans of photos #363, 4280, and 5993 are available upon patron request.
The Extension and Experiment Station Communications Photograph Collection consists of about 25,500 images generated by Experiment Station staff. These images were used in publications such as Oregon's Agricultural Progress and Pacific Northwest Bulletins as well as news releases, poster presentations and displays. The images depict a variety of OSU research projects, Experiment Station branch facilities, portraits of OSU staff, Extension and Experiment Station-sponsored events, and animal-oriented topics.
An addition to the collection, Accession 1994:037, is comprised of images from various Experiment Station publications dating between 1938 and 1963, including the Station Bulletin.
An addition to the collection, Accession 1995:040, is comprised of black and white prints, slides, contact sheets, and negatives documenting, among other things, Agricultural Honors Scholarship winner, work of the USDA Extension Service, Warm Spring Indian Reservation Youth 4-H, the Reach Independence through Self-Employment (R.I.S.E.) program, the Expanded Food and Nutriciton Eucation Program (EFNEP), the Extension Service Mini College, Japanese exchange, OYPC Plan Identification, 4-H Summer School, and various staff and events.
An addition to the collection, Accession 1995:046 consists of black and white portraits of Extension Service personnel removed from personnel files. Also included is a contact sheet titled "Garren - Tom Gentle, Feb 1977," and a press release and photograph of Dr. J.M. Witt, Extension Chemist and Professor of Agricultural Chemistry, giving the keynote address at the Northeastern Weed Science Society's 34th Annual Meeting.
An addition to the collection, Accession 1996:040, is comprised of a slide production entitled, "Wood Stove and Fireplace Safety, 1978" (80 color slides with accompanying typescript narration).
An addition to the collection, Accession 1997:092, consists of black and white portraits of Extension Service personnel removed from personnel files. Also included are hand-drawn caricatures of Frank L. Ballard, long-time Extension Service employee and eighth president of OSU. One of the drawings is signed C.A. Bond (likely Carl Bond).
An addition to the collection, Accession 2000:088, consists of a single black and white image of Extension Communications and Agricultural Experiment Station Communications Staff, circa 1974-1975; at the time, the two offices were administratively separate. Seated (l to r): Ralph Salisbury (Extension publications specialist); Leonard Calvert (Extension communications specialist); Ken Kingsley (Extension communications specialist); Jim Leadon (Extension editor); Charles Jackson (Extension communications specialist). Standing (l to r): Margaret Koehne (Extension editor); Gwil Evans (director of Extension communications); Bill Smith (Extension communications specialist); Linda McCormick (Experiment station editor); Richard Floyd (Experiment station editor and department head).
An addition to the collection, Accession 2003:098, consists of 707 slides generated by the Office of Extension and Experiment Station Communications depicting research projects and various staff members at five Extension and Experiment Station branches: Central Oregon Agricultural Research Center, Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center, Klamath Experiment Station, Mid-Columbia Agriculture and Research and Extension Center, and the Central Oregon Agricultural Research Center branch station. Organized in five groups corresponding to the five stations, these images include views of indoor laboratory research, irrigation, harvesting equipment, research on agricultural plots, insects and livestock. There are also images of various Field Day events and participants. Staff members are identified.
An addition to the collection, Accession 2008:038, is made up of images taken by Extension and Experiment Station Communications staff for use in various OSU publications, news releases, poster presentations, and displays. Numbering 243 color slides in total, the images depict agricultural research specimens, Field Day outings, tours of research plots, controlled field burning, laboratory research, Experiment Station branches, and cattle management. Most of the images were taken at stations in Central and Eastern Oregon around the regions of Burns, Madras, Heppner, Powell Butte and Pendleton. These slides were also scanned and saved as .tif files onto two cds that were included in this transfer.
An addition to the collection, Accession 2008:102, consists of photographs taken by Extension Service staff that were featured in 4-H manuals and Pacific Northwest Bulletins. Numbering about 500 images in total (200 prints and 300 negatives), about half of the photos were used in manuals pertaining to the care and management of farm animals such as pygmy goats, sheep, goats, rabbits, dairy and beef cattle. Other animal-oriented topics documented in these published photos include horse riding and judging, and dog obedience training. Images in this transfer not relating to animals depict 4-H programs including training in archery, handicrafts and computers.
An addition to the collection, Accession 2009:011, includes photographic images documenting a 1992 fire at the Industrial Building which destroyed the OSU printing facility and 90% of the Extension publication inventory. Made up of a total of 91 images (84 slides and 7 prints), the photographs are a combination of views of the fire being brought under control and the scorched aftermath of the building as a gutted structure. Five of the prints are mounted on foam core and appear to have been displayed at some point. Also included in this transfer is an undated instructional slide presentation on the process of planning the writing and layout of an Extension publication.
An addition to the collection, Accession 2012:017, is made up of photographs taken by Extension and Experiment Station Communications staff for use in publications produced at OSU such as Oregon's Agricultural Progress. Some of these images were also featured in special OSU editions of the Corvallis Gazette-Times newspaper. Numbering about 25,000 images in total (10,000 prints and 15,000 negatives), these photographs depict a variety of OSU research projects, Experiment Station branch station facilities, portrait shots of OSU staff, gatherings of the Agricultural Research Foundation, and events such as the Diamond Pioneer Awards Luncheon. Among the images found in this transfer are a few photographs originating from the collections of the OSU Special Collections and Archives, and the Oregon Historical Society.

Within this historic usage, it has been applied to place names, and scientific or colloquial names for plants. In this collection, the term "squaw" is used in the context of Squaw Butte, Oregon, and the Squaw Butte Experiment Station. This station is now known as the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center.
In order to provide historical context and to enable standardized searching and access across our collecctions, we have retained the use of this phrase in the collection description.
