Scope and Content Notes

Accession 2002:075 consists of about 950 photographic images taken and collected by Entomology Professor H. H. Crowell. Consisting of black and white prints and negatives, color prints, 35mm black and white negatives, and glass plate negatives, these photographs depict insect impact upon crops and pesticide research at farm plots managed both by the university and privately. Among the insects featured in these images are: cutworms, aphids, squash bugs, cabbage maggots, onion maggots, symphylids, slugs and ants. There are also images of Entomology Department staff engaged in research and special events such as a summer picnic. In addition to the photographs, there are seven Super-8 films of rain beetles, termites, scarabaeidae larva, and harvestor ants filmed in the McDonald Research Forest and in a lab.

This accession also contains about 800 photographs given to Ralph Berry by fellow Entomology Department Professors Hugh Morrison and H. H. Crowell. The photos comprise of black and white prints and negatives, color prints, and 35mm color glass slides. Depicted in the photos are various insects such as symphylids, millipedes, and potato flea beetles and evidence of their damage to fields and crops. Also included are images of Entomology Department staff, equipment used in fumigation and research, the OSU Field Insectory, and Hop Field Day.

Accession 2003:067 contains 815 photographic images (556 prints; 176 slides; 83 negatives) generated and collected by the Entomology Department. In addition to images of various department faculty, staff, and students, these photos also document entomology research and fieldwork, various insects, faculty retirement parties, department dinners, and exhibits at OSU and elsewhere organized by the department.

Accession 2005:030 is made up of a photographic print depicting an early beekeeping class. The Withycombe or Wilson House is visible in the background of the shot.

Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Entomology has been taught at Oregon State since 1873. The Department of Zoology and Entomology was established in 1889, with F. L. Washburn as the chair. In 1914 Entomology was made a separate department and an undergraduate major was created. An M.S. in Entomology was begun in 1911, and in 1938 a Ph. D. program began. Since 1923 the department has been a part of both the College of Science and the College Agricultural Sciences.

Originally housed in Benton Hall, the department moved to Education Hall in 1902, then moved again in 1910 to Strand Hall, and finally relocated to Cordley Hall in 1957. Arthur Burton Cordley served as a professor of Zoology and Entomology as well as Experiment Station Entomologist.

In 2003, due to budget reductions, the Entomology Department was eliminated as a separate organizational unit and the core instructional, scientific, and service functions were transferred to other OSU departments.
