Born in Nebraska, Doris received a BS in Science (1937) and a Masters in Education from Oregon State College (1950). In between her student years, Doris worked in France for the American Red Cross from 1944-1945. Employed as a Professor of Business Education at the College of Marin-Kentfield for 30 years, Doris wrote three handbooks used widely in the fields of business and education. She married Robert Whalen in 1958. In addition to establishing a scholarship for women in business at OSU, Doris also bequeathed a gift to the OSU Library upon her death in 2001.
Born in New York in 1919, Robert Whalen taught at University of California at Berkeley, the College of Marin, and Chabot Junior College. He died in 1994.

The scrapbooks, originally housed in 3-ring binders, were dismantled and their contents were placed in file folders in their original order. Photocopies of the scrapbook pages were made before their removal from the binders and have been placed in the boxes with the scrapbooks.
