Biographical / Historical Notes

Deschutes Brewery was founded in 1988 by Gary Fish in downtown Bend, Oregon. it was named after the Deschutes River, which runs through town. In 1993, Deschutes expanded beyond the original pub to a larger brewery and tasting room on SW Simpson Street in Bend. In 2008, the brewery opened a second pub in the Pearl District of Portland, Oregon.

Gary Fish hired Frank Appleton, a brewing consultant from Canada, in 1987 to help design the brewing component of the facility on Bond Street in Bend. Appleton designed the equipment, worked to install it, and formulated the first three beers (Cascade Golden Ale, Bachelor Bitter, Black Butte Porter) and Deschutes first brewer, John Harris, adjusted the recipe. The company has produced a range of beers including Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Fresh Squeezed IPA, Chainbreaker White IPA, Obsidian Stout, Red Chair NWPA, Jubelale, Hop Henge Experimental IPA, Hop Trip, The Dissident, Mirror Mirror, and The Abyss.

Deschutes Brewery has focused on the community, hosting events such as the Sagebrush Classic, which raised money for the Deschutes Children's Foundation, and sustainability, which was recognized from agencies from the Central Oregon Environmental Center to the Environmental Protection Agency.
