Founded in 2001, Hmong at OSU is a student group at Oregon State University dedicated to fostering awareness of Hmong culture at OSU and in the surrounding communities. Hmong at OSU also provides leadership skills, social skills, social and emotional support, and educational support to its members. Hmong at OSU has conducted a number of outreach events over the past two decades, including skits, potlucks, sports events, and speaking events. Hmong at OSU has been an active member of ISOSU - International Students of Oregon State University - and often collaborates with ISOSU and other student groups to raise awareness of diverse cultures and communities at Oregon State University. While they generally are referred to as Hmong at OSU, the official name of the organization is HMONG, an acronym for Hmong Minority Opportunity Nationality Group and Awareness.
The term Hmong refers to an ethnic group with a specific language and culture. The Hmong originally come from China, but many migrated to various countries in southeast Asia, particularly Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand, in the 1800s due to land expansion by the Chinese government. In the 1960s, the United States sought out Hmong people to participate in the Cold War against communist leaders in southeast Asia. Unfortunately, after the Vietnam War, Hmong people were persecuted by local communist governments due to their support of the U.S. government. As a result, many Hmong people fled their homes and sought asylum in the United States, leading to a significant Hmong population throughout the country.
