Abstract

The Writing Intensive Curriculum (WIC) Program Records document the establishment and functioning of this program to incorporate writing across the curriculum at Oregon State University.  The collection consists of published newsletters and the program's website.  The Writing Intensive Curriculum was established at Oregon State in 1990 as part of the Baccalaureate Core Curriculum.  Vicki Tolar Burton has served as Director since 1993.

All of the published issues of the Teaching with Writing newsletter are available in Oregon Digital.

Scope and Content Notes

The Writing Intensive Curriculum (WIC) Program Records document the establishment and functioning of this program to support writing intensive teaching across the curriculum at Oregon State University.  The collection consists of published newsletters and the program's website.

Teaching with Writing, the program's newsletter, was published 2-4 times per academic year and includes announcements of seminars and grants and articles about writing instruction and pedagogy.  Begininng with the Spring 2011 issue, the newsletter was issued in an exclusively on-line format.  All of the published issues of the Teaching with Writing newsletter are available in Oregon Digital.

The Writing Intensive Curriculum website provides comprehensive documentation of the program's activities.  It includes the on-line version of Teaching with Writing, resources for faculty and students, and administration information about the program.  The website has been captured for long-term preservation and access using Archive-It.  Links to the captured website are provided in the container list.

Biographical / Historical Notes

The Writing Intensive Curriculum (WIC) Program was established in 1990 to support Oregon State University faculty in their use of writing intensive teaching and to provide consultation and direction to academic departments in designing and proposing WIC courses for the new Baccalaureate Core Curriculum.  Lex Runciman served as the initial director of the Program in 1990-1992 and Jon Olson was Acting WIC Director in 1992-1993.  The current Director, Vicki Tolar Burton has led the program for 25 years, since her appointment in 1993.

Acquisition Note: The published newsletters were received by the former University Archives by campus distribution through 2009.  The website was crawled and captured by the Special Collections and Archives Research Center in 2013 and 2018.

The WIC Program website provides comprehensive documentation of the program and includes the Teaching with Writing on-line newsletter; resources for faculty and students; and administrative information about the program.  Faculty resources include information about seminars, awards, WIC learning outcomes, the WIC course assessment schedule and teaching resources.  Student Resources include tips and resources for writing and information about finding WIC courses.  Additional information about the WIC Program includes biographical information about the Director, Vicki Tolar Burton; annual reports; members of the Advisory Board; and college writing profiles.
