Abstract

Barbara Pope Photographs of Marys Peak (Oregon) consists of 28 snapshots of Marys Peak taken on June 27, 1967. Barbara Pope took photographs of people, plants, meadows, forests and vistas while on a tour of the mountain lead by Oregon State University professor of botany and plant pathology, William Chilcote. The collection contains images of logging on Marys Peak and the vegetation in areas that had previously been logged.

Scope and Content Notes

Barbara Pope Photographs of Marys Peak (Oregon) consists of 28 snapshots of Marys Peak taken in the summer of 1967. Barbara Pope took the photographs of people, plants, meadows, forests and vistas while on a tour of Marys Peak lead by Oregon State University professor of botany and plant pathology, Dr. William Chilcote.

The subjects depicted in the photographs include logging on Marys Peak; areas that had been logged 6, 11 and 14 years earlier; plant specimens, including grasses, flowers and trees; and the valleys and mountains seen from Marys Peak. One image is of Dr. William Chilcote speaking to the tour group.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Barbara Pope (1937-2016) received her bachelor of science degree from San Francisco State University and master’s degree from Stanford University, where she specialized in the physiology of algae.

From 1965 to 2000, Pope taught biology and interdisciplinary studies at Chabot College in Hayward, California. While on sabbatical, she studied Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species at Cambridge University and returned to teach on the subject in Chabot College’s innovative Interdisciplinary Studies Department in the Letters and Science program.

In June, 1967, Barbara Pope was part of a group that toured Marys Peak with Dr. William Chilcote, who was a professor of botany and plant pathology at Oregon State University from 1950 to 1982.
