Scope and Content Notes

The Forest Fire Ephemera Collection is comprised of educational pamphlets and posters generated by multiple agencies including the United States Forest Service, Keep Oregon Green Association and the Oregon Department of Forestry.  This collection includes poster designs from James Hansen, George Giusti, Rudolph Wendelin, Albert Staehle, and Ross Wetzel.  The posters depict forest fire prevention strategies, including statements from Smokey Bear about individual responsibility.

Biographical / Historical Notes

The United States Forest Service, part of the United States Department of Agriculture, increased efforts for forest fire prevention during World War II.  Timber was an important asset for creating and sustaining military supplies. The campaign for fire prevention included Smokey Bear, and other educational pieces focused on individual responsibility for forest protection.   At the local level, the State of Oregon Fire Service (part of the Oregon Department of Forestry) and the Keep Oregon Green Association focused on local fire prevention education and information.
